Would your life be any different today if people had kept their promises to you? Being on the receiving end of broken promises can so often lead to feelings of insecurity and uncertainty, giving rise to a lack of peace and an increase in stress and struggle in our lives. Would the lives of people around us be any different today if we had kept all our promises to them?

Jesus understands the importance to life of keeping promises. He teaches his followers, in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew’s gospel chapter 5 verse 37: “Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’, and your ‘No’, ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.”

No matter how hard we try, sadly, if we are honest with ourselves, we all fail at times to meet this perfect standard for life in keeping all our promises. Thankfully God is perfect and he keeps all his promises. He has even kept the most costly promise of all, to forgive his people for their wrongdoing, even their broken promises that destroy life and deserve death. He can do this because he gave his son, Jesus Christ, to die the death we all deserve when he died on the cross.

Anyone can be forgiven by God today and find peace and security in knowing him as their heavenly Father by coming to Jesus, to trust in him and follow him. This peace and security in him helps us through times when others have broken their promises to us. Jesus also promises to come to be with us, giving us life to the full and helping us to be those who more and more keep our promises to others, letting our ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’, and our ‘No’, ‘No’.

Will you seek and find this security and peace in God and in his promises that are all fulfilled in Jesus Christ?
